Clyde & Co hires team for New Jersey opening

INTERNATIONAL LAW firm Clyde & Co has opened an office in New Jersey following the lateral hire of two partners from US law firm Connell Foley.

Partners Daren McNally and Barbara Almeida arrive at Clydes together with a team of associates, as the firm continues its strategy of attempting to expand in the US. Board member and dispute resolution partner, James Burns, said the hires would “strengthen the range of services the firm was able to offer the international insurance market both worldwide and in the US, particularly in the field of Bermuda form arbitrations”.

New Jersey becomes the firm’s third base in the US, joining New York and San Francisco. Other international offices include emerging markets Caracas and Abu Dhabi, as well as Moscow, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Shanghai. The firm also has associate offices in Bangalore and Mumbai in India, Belgrade, Riyadh and St Petersburg, while in June 2009 the firm formed an association with India’s ALMT Legal on the understanding that the two firms would move to merge “once it becomes legally permissible”.

News of the new office also came as Clyde & Co acquired eight London-based construction and infrastructure partners, and their teams from Shadbolt LLP.

Shadbolt partner Liz Jenkins said: “Clyde & Co will provide our clients with further strength in our key practice areas, as well as access to an international network to which we can contribute our great depth of expertise and our business in Africa and relationships in Eastern Europe.” Shadbolt has a joint venture in Tanzania that now continues under Clyde’s management.

Shadbolt’s Paris office and UK corporate practice also join the larger firm, while partners and fee-earners “with a more local focus” are to join other firms, it confirmed.
