CC senior partner to chair new City lobby group
CLIFFORD CHANCE senior partner, Stuart Popham, has been appointed the chair of a new lobbying body designed to continue promoting London as a key financial centre following the global recession.
Initially funded by the City of London Corporation, the group, dubbed TheCityUK, will attempt to foster greater understanding of the finance sector in the UK and internationally, as well as providing input into proposals for regulatory reforms.
“We must put right the mistakes of the past, forge a new deal with the British public and establish a co-ordinated agenda to promote UK financial services on the European and world stages,” Popham commented.
The organisation would “steer a clear, well-defined course through the inevitable changes, reforms and reappraisals”, he added.
The umbrella group is officially due to launch in Spring 2010, and later plans to join forces with International Financial Services London. It has the backing of Lloyds Banking Group’s Sir Win Bischoff and former Merrill Lynch European head Bob Wigley, both of whom released reports on the future of financial regulation in 2008.
