Skadden unveils diversity drive
SKADDEN, ARPS, Slate, Meagher & Flom has unveiled plans to commit some $9.6m to a new scheme to encourage a greater diversity of entrants into the legal profession in the US.
The launch of the ‘Skadden Arps Honors Program’ coincides with the firm’s 60th anniversary. It will see 100 students from minority backgrounds at City College of New York offered a two-year scholarship with the firm, comprising help at law school, summer internships, and some mentoring from the firm’s own lawyers. The programme is designed to compliment the school’s own academic curriculum.Senior partner Joseph Flom said the scheme was “a work in progress”.
Skadden celebrated its 60th anniversary on 2 April 2008; at the same time naming 25 new partners across 11 offices – eight in New York, four in Washington D.C., two each in Chicago and Los Angeles, and three in London. Offices in Moscow, Brussels, Toronto, Wilmington, Palo Alto and Boston also saw new appointments.
In March 2008 the firm also announced it would open its first office in Latin America – in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Portuguese-speaking corporate partner Jonathan D. Bisgaier will head the outpost, supported by two lawyers - fellow corporate partner Aleja
