Country report: Review - Sandals
By Anna Head
Sandals is situated in 19 acres of tropical landscape on Dickenson Bay in Antigua, a mere 15 minutes from the airport. A couples-only hotel, it is a consistent award-winner for romantic resorts. From hammocks for two to Pagodas set up for marriage ceremonies, it gears everything towards encouraging romance. During the 24 hours I was there I witnessed four weddings and at least two renewals of vows – riveting to witness and really good entertainment.
Sandals is a place for the young, or at least the young at heart. The accommodation is not particularly sophisticated or luxurious, but within the nine different categories all the rooms are of a good standard and have all the mod cons you would expect such as air conditioning and satellite TV. Room options include the popular honeymoon Garden Rondavals, which are attractively located away from prying eyes and have private plunge pools. Another popular option is the ocean view
suite, which has a private balcony or patio. It is worth paying the little bit extra and going for one of these two.
As Sandals is all-inclusive on cost, it is particularly attractive to those on a budget. This means there are no hidden extras – and all meals and drinks –including a selection of bottles in your room - are included in the price.
There are five different restaurants to choose from, including Italian and Oriental cuisine – as well as a restaurant serving international cuisine by candlelight and five bars. For those who want an element of home from home, there is even a replica English pub!
The beach has been voted the fourth most beautiful beach in the world and every conceivable water sport is on offer. There are five freshwater pools dotted around, which means none of them ever become overly crowded. The Spa was being renovated when I was there, but it looked very promising with a comprehensive choice of treatments.
Big changes are afoot. It is about to have a new neighbour. The all-singing, all-dancing US$70m Mediterranean Village opens this February. It is the most significant expansion in the Sandals portfolio to date, reinforcing Antigua’s appeal. The new hotel has been built next to the original Sandals and will feature 180 luxurious suites, all ocean facing, together with the largest freshwater pool in the Eastern Caribbean. They are also building a state-of-the-art gym and shopping village within the complex, while guests will be able to dine at either property, meaning an even greater selection.
I was far too anti-social and didn’t take part in any of the group activities on offer. But for the brave there is bingo, volleyball, billiards and ping pong. I have to admit that at the sing-a-long I feebly did a bunk and scurried back to my room. Sandals isn’t for everybody, least of all families – children are not only neither seen nor heard, but they are banned altogether. But for those couples who want activity and romance, Sandals is worth considering.
